Portland Museum's dinosaur fun day is a Jurassic lark

A DINOSAUR-INSPIRED fun day is returning to Portland Museum this half term.

Tomorrow sees the return of the popular ‘Dino Day – the Jurassic Years!’ Activities for children of all ages to enjoy will include a dinosaur egg hunt, dinosaur mask making, making your very own ‘concertina dinosaurus’ and face painting.

There will also be the opportunity to make a plaster cast fossil with fossil expert Phil Anslow as well as the chance to work with local sculptor Pat Moverley on a giant dinosaur sculpture outside in the museum garden.

There will also be a ‘Dig up a Dinosaur’ box so budding bone hunters can discover what species lived around Portland during the Jurassic period. There will also be a selection of real dinosaur bones from local sea monsters which swam the Jurassic seas, such as the plesiosaur, for kids to handle.

Dino Day will also include the chance to see one of the museum’s most recent and special additions to its collection, the ‘Portland Turtle’, believed to be one of the oldest examples of this species in Europe.

The turtle was discovered by Diane Godden in Fancy Beach Quarry and kindly donated to the museum in 2011 by Albion Stone PLC.

A Jurassic Coast family walk will be taking place from the museum at 11.30am and 2.30pm and led by ‘Wild about Weymouth and Portland ‘Project Officer’ Lyn Cooch.

The walk along the isle’s Jurassic coastline will give the chance to learn about the geology and natural world which surrounds this beautiful part of the island.

The Dino Day will begin at 10.30am and will run all day until 4pm.

Entry will be £3 per child, adults free or get the chance to purchase a Portland Museum Annual Pass for £6 per child to attend the event free on the day and for all other events for the rest of the year which take place during every school holiday.

Normal admission applies for entry to the museum at other times this week, adults £3, concessions £2.50 and children over five £1.
