AS MUSIC, drugs and dance engulfed Manchester in the late 80s, The Happy Mondays were merrily leading the way on all fronts. With the original line-up together for the first time in 19 years,
expectations were high for a misty-eyed trip down memory lane.

The palm-stretching demands of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2 were, in the hands of Nikolai Lugansky, supremely accomplished. In a live BBC Radio 3 broadcast there seemed to be that extra bit of
tension in the pregnant silence before Lugansky pressed the keys of the carefully controlled chords, high in expectation. No disappointment here; with many pleasing romantic gestures through its
  powerful course.

Fairytale and nightmare; extremes of musical inspiration, and betwixt them in a sky-blue dress, Alina Ibragimova performing Saint-Saens’ Violin Concerto No3. Symphonic in outlook, there is a depth
to this work that Ibragimova conveyed with considerable intensity, powerfully supported by the BSO under Yan Pasacal Tortelier.

THIS play is billed as ‘A Steamy Comedy’ and it most certainly lived up to its name. Set in a ladies-only health spa with a staff of gorgeous men willing to tend to the ladies every need... I’ll
leave the rest to your imagination. The cast worked hard to bring the play together but on the preview night there were some technical problems, particularly with the microphones which made it
difficult to hear some of the dialogue.
